  • Wanna help build Syzygryd?

    2010 - 07.27

Are you deft with a soldering iron? Or perhaps you’re feeling a little punchy, future riveter? Do you simply have some extra time and the willingness to be put to work on one of Syzygryd’s many components? And … are you local to the San Francisco bay area?

Well, then, come on over to NIMBY and join our rush to the finish line! We’ve got snacks, soda and beer, and music to fuel you while you work. And, of course, plenty of good company.

Current tasks include copious riveting, soldering and electronics work. While skilled electricians are especially welcome for electron plumbing, new volunteers of all skill levels are still welcome. Those cubes gotta blink! We also need to get Syzygryd spewing some fire and blasting some music.

    Official work days include:
    •  Sundays, Mondays, Fridays and Saturdays, 1pm – midnight
    • Tuesdays and Wednesdays 7pm – midnight.

Our shop is located at NIMBY, 8410 Amelia St, Oakland, CA, 94621.

When you arrive, please ask for Morley, so that we can get you oriented and set up with something to do! If Morley isn’t around, look for Ian or Simon.

For those interested in getting on board with the software and musical components, contact Emma — emma [at] syzygryd [dot] com — for more information. Those teams meet separately from the rest of the fabrication crews once a week on Thursday evenings. If you would like to contribute music to Syzygryd, you can do so at music.syzygryd.com.

Wait, you aren’t local to the San Francisco bay area? Oh. Sadly, our fabrication is based in Oakland, CA. But we would love to see you on playa anyway! Syzygryd will be installed in the inner playa, between manbase and 7:30. Please come by and say hello.

In fact, if you have a few hours to spare during event time, Syzygryd needs your help keeping climbers off its arms! There are sensitive electronics along each arm and it would be awfully sad if a climber ruined Syzygryd for the rest of us at Burning Man. We’re looking for people who are willing to commit two hours at a time for rocking climb prevention. We could also use your help with strike!

Phew. As you can see, there are a lot of ways for you to help bring Syzygryd to reality! Don’t be shy. We’d love to meet you, especially if it means we can put you to work.

Until then, take a gander at our “Join Us” page and hop onto our announce-only mailing list.

Syzygryd is Sponsored by Ableton Live

    2010 - 07.16

A few words from our Music and Code Team:

Hello Syzygryd folks. There are some exciting, seriously awesome things happening on the music and code side of things. Really, read on for more details.

First, Syzygryd is now an Ableton Live sponsored project. Thanks to the generosity of Ableton, we have been granted copies of Live to use in our project. We sincerely appreciate this and would like to say a big “THANK YOU” to Ableton. What an awesome company!

Second, we have released a new, even more fabulous MDK. Check it out here.

Now, instead of installing separate Processing sketches and mucking around with Java compatibilities, Syzygryd sequencer and controller are one super powerful VST. Thanks to the tireless efforts of our code team for turning this out in a short time. This means it’s way easier for you to write that set you’ve been wanting to write. And with only a month left, it’s time to get on it.

    Thanks for playing along.

Kickstarter is finished – WE DID IT!

    2010 - 07.10

Whoa! You must really want to see Syzygryd on fire!

Well, you’ve got it! With the generous contributions from all our supporters, we managed to blast past our original Kickstarter goal and raise more than $10,900!

All of us on the Syzygryd crew are humbled and grateful for all the support. We couldn’t have done this without you, and you came through like gangbusters when we asked for your help.

Take a look at this beauty of an arm,  as photographed by Dan Garcia:

Can you imagine walking underneath this curve of steel, cubes spitting sequenced flame above your head as you watch the fire tornado roaring up from the central cube tornado?

Thanks to you, not only will Syzygryd be able to feature a fire tornado and sequenced flame effects along each arm, we’ll be able to finance the fuel to keep Syzygryd burning longer each night.

Now that the Kickstarter pledge dollars are hitting our bank account, everybody on the fire crew is busy at work turning the prototyped fire tornado and designed flame effects into reality. Just this week we have purchased metal and fittings for the fire tornado, hot surface ignitors, aluminum for machining valve brackets, solenoid valves, and nozzle parts. Oh, and regulators (yes, shhhh, we do need the ability to turn the fire *down*, sorry to say..!)

Here are sneak peeks of what is to come:

    Variable height super-reliable-ignition flames!

    CAD-based cardboard fire tornado prototype!

Cardboard + fan + flamethrower now, soon to be metal + accumulators + plumbing + fan + propane!

In addition to helping our flame effects become real objects, you’ve made it possible for us to release detailed designs, documentation, and templates for our flame effects and fuel systems. This is in addition to our planned release of the grid sequencer in Processing and CC-licensed sounds for Syzygryd in Ableton Live. We will also be teaching workshops on ignition systems and the fire vortex at Burning Man 2010.

And all of that is thanks to your financial support!

We are trying to get as much of your hard-earned schwag to you before our departure for Burning Man. However, we have a lot going on at the shop! Right now, every person on the build crew is busy pulling Syzygryd together from various piles of metal, wire, LEDs, and acrylic. Please be patient with us if you don’t get your pledge-level items right away. Look for a form requesting your address and pledge item preferences in the very near future.

(And, hey, if you’d like to lend a hand at the shop, drop us a line at volunteers@syzygryd.com!)

Again, all of us at Syzygryd are deeply grateful for your support in making this happen. Thank you so much for your contribution. We can’t wait to present Syzygryd to you!

Now let’s get her out to the Black Rock Desert!
